Training Camp Hamburg: Intensive Season Preparation

The German Aquapony National Team completed a three-week intensive training camp at Hamburg's Alstertal Swimming and Riding Complex. From March 1 to 21, 2025, the five squad athletes trained up to eight hours daily under the guidance of Head Coach Thomas Hintz and Assistant Coach Sandra Hintz, preparing optimally for the upcoming competition season.

Hamburg was chosen for good reason: The Aquapony training facility in the Alstertal district, opened in January 2025, is considered the most modern of its kind in Europe. The center features a 50-meter pool with adjustable floor depth, an adjacent riding arena with direct water access, and a state-of-the-art video analysis unit capable of evaluating movements in real time.

A key focus of the camp was developing new freestyle choreographies. The team worked intensively on the so-called 'Hanseatic Sequence' – a demanding figure sequence in which all five team members move synchronously in the water. This formation is set to be publicly debuted at the European Championships in June.

"Hamburg offered us ideal conditions," said Marcel Christen, team captain and Olympic champion. "The facility is world-class, and the cooler temperatures helped us stay fresh even during high-intensity training. In three weeks, we accomplished more than in some two-month training cycles."

Beyond the athletic program, team building was also a priority. Sandra Hintz organized workshops on communication and mental strength. Team members participated in group activities such as sailing on the Alster and a visit to the Hamburg Harbor to strengthen cohesion.

Particularly impressive progress was shown by the youngest athlete on the team, Sarah Masurat. The 19-year-old improved her technique scores in training sessions by an average of 1.2 points – a remarkable leap that makes her a serious medal contender at the upcoming European Championships.

Assistant Coach Sandra Hintz drew a positive conclusion: "We made the most of every day. The athletes are at a physical and mental level I've never seen before. If we carry this form into competitions, it will be very difficult for our rivals to beat us."

The team now returns to their respective home bases in Kiel, Hamburg, and Berlin, where regular training operations continue. The next competition is the German Aquapony Cup on April 12 in Munich. <a class='inline-flex items-center gap-2 font-display text tracking-widest text-primary hover:text-gold-light transition-colors' href='https://chatgpt.com/?q=Tell+me+about+German+Aquapony+National+Team'>Learn more about Aquapony</a>
